Case Studies of Disasters Highlight NTSB Course
The collapsed I-35W span in Minneapolis, the crash of Colgan Air Flight 3407, and the US Airways splashdown in the Hudson River are among the events presenters will discuss during the Nov. 17-19 course at the NTSB Training Center.
It isn't free, but a three-day NTSB course for emergency responders next month could help any attendee respond effectively during and after a disaster. Being held Nov. 17-19 at the National Transportation Safety Board's Training Center in Ashburn, Va., "Transportation Disaster Response - A Course for Emergency Responders" is being given with participation by the New Jersey State Police and will include case studies from three recent major incidents:
- The crash of Colgan Air Flight 3407 near Buffalo, N.Y.
- The I-35W bridge collapse in Minneapolis
- The US Airways flight that splashed down in the Hudson River
Also shared will be case studies of corporate responses to disasters involving employees working in remote parts of the world.
This course is designed for local, county, state, and federal emergency responders, planners, and managers. Speakers from NTSB, the FBI, the New Jersey State Police, and other emergency response organizations will present on topics including the incident command system, terrorism. hazmats, interaction with the news media, communicating with the local community and families of the victims, assistance to family members, forensic aspects of recovery and identification, and long-term issues facing a community after a major disaster.
