South Africa's Labour Department Targets Steel, Farming
Employers who received non-compliance notices a few weeks ago will be revisited by inspectors Aug. 11-12, the department said.
Inspectors from South Africa's Department of Labour will be back on the road Aug. 11-12 to revisit agriculture and iron and steel employers who were served with non-compliance notices a few weeks ago. Chief Inspector Thobile Lamati said the focus would be on ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations. "It is the Minister's position that workers are sacrosanct and that employers should not sacrifice workers’ lives for profit," Lamati said in the department's announcement.
The initial inspection identified these two sectors -- construction small employers and subcontractors in particular -- as high in risk but low in compliance, according to the department. It says the construction sector remains one of South Africa's most dangerous, with the highest number of occupational fatalities and injuries.
