U.S. Steel, EPA to Hold Public Meeting on Cleanup in Gary, Indiana

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 and Pittsburgh-based U.S. Steel will hold a public meeting Tuesday, Aug. 4, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the main branch of the Gary Public Library, 220 W. 5th Ave., in Gary, Ind.

Representatives from EPA, Indiana Department of Environmental Management, and U.S. Steel will discuss and answer questions about the use, operation, and air monitoring of the remediation waste disposal unit (sometimes called a corrective action management unit or CAMU) at U.S. Steel's Gary Works, one of the largest steel plants in the country. The CAMU was used to dispose of sediments from the Grand Calumet River and, subject to EPA approval, may be used for disposal of remediation waste from the cleanup of the site.

An official document file has been set up at the Gary Public Library.
