ASSE Hosts Upcoming 'Safety in Design' Virtual Class

The best way to control hazards and reduce injuries is to eliminate the hazards in the design phase of a project, rather than manage the risk afterward. Safety in Design--also known as Design for Safety and Prevention Through Design--is the formal methodology for doing just that.

The American Society of Safety Engineers will be hosting a virtual class on Wednesday, July 8, from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. CDT. This course will cover all aspects of Safety in Design beginning with hazard identification, including recognized hazards and "hidden" hazards. Hazards that arise from operator error, wear, and tear; installation; and lack of maintenance will be included.

Also, various risk assessment models that are used to assess the risk will be presented, and the hierarchy of controls will be presented and discussed. Many examples and case studies from general industry and construction will be included to illustrate how Safety in Design can be used in real world scenarios.

Those attending the virtual class will learn:

  • a basic understanding of the Safety in Design approach to eliminating or mitigating hazards;
  • how to identify hazards in a given system, both recognized hazards, hidden hazards, and hazards that may arise from operator error, lack of maintenance, wear and tear, and other real life factors;
  • how to perform risk analysis to assess the risk associated with a given hazard;
  • how to apply the hierarchy of controls to a eliminate a hazard; and,
  • how Safety in Design can be applied to real life situations.

Upon completion of this session, attendees will receive:

  • a link to the recorded version of the session, for later viewing, and
  • 0.2 CEU credits (to receive CEUs, you must also complete the course assessment)

Moderating the virtual class will be John W. Mroszczyk, Ph.D., PE, CSP. He is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Society of Safety Engineers, and the National Society of Professional Engineers.
