SAMHSA Readies Big Award to Anti-Drug Group

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration announced Monday that it intends to award about $625,000 per year for up to five years to the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America in a single-source grant. CADCA alone is eligible; it will get the money by submitting a satisfactory application that is approved by an independent review group.

SAMHSA's notice said the agency wants the grant "to leverage existing resources and conference support to expand SAMHSA's scope and capacity to provide training and technical assistance to a large number of community leaders across the country who are committed to substance abuse prevention, substance abuse/addiction treatment and recovery support, and substance abuse/addiction-related mental health issues."

CADCA "is uniquely qualified to carry out the activities of this program because the purpose of the program is to partner with a national organization that has special expertise and unique broad, national-level experience in working with community anti-drug coalitions," the notice states, adding that CADCA provides training and technical assistance through a national leadership conference for thousands of members of community coalitions that are dedicated to preventing substance abuse.

The next conference in that series is CADCA's 19th Annual National Leadership Forum, set for Feb. 9-12, 2009, at National Harbor, Md. Registration for the "Charting the Course" event will open Nov. 10.
