ASSE Foundation Announces New Scholarship for Aspiring SH&E Student

The American Society of Safety Engineers Foundation recently announced the availability of a new $1,000 scholarship. Available to both graduate and undergraduate students pursuing degrees in occupational SH&E or a closely related field, the award will be part of the Foundation's 2009 scholarship package, and the first recipient will be announced on April 1, 2009.

The Council on Certification of Health, Environmental and Safety Technologists (CCHEST) established the new award--the CCHEST-Patrick J. Conroy Scholarship--with an initial contribution of $8,000. ASSE said the name of the scholarship will change each year, but for 2009 it is named in honor of Patrick J. Conroy, OHST, CHST, who currently is a special assistant to the Board for CCHEST. Previously, he served as the council's program director and held various positions on the CCHEST Board from 2000 to 2005, including board president.

"We are honored to award the first-ever Patrick J. Conroy Scholarship to a deserving student in April," said ASSE Foundation Chair Stephen Bennett. "CCHEST chose to name the scholarship after Conroy for both his efforts to encourage professional development and for his contributions to the profession. The ASSE Foundation hopes that Conroy's contribution to the profession will inspire future safety professionals to emulate his achievements with help from this scholarship."

Conroy has worked in the safety and health field for nearly 40 years and in the past served as vice president of King and Neel in Honolulu, where he directed business development and service delivery of risk control services throughout the Pacific-Rim. He has received numerous awards and honors for his professional volunteer activities including being named a Veterans of Safety Fellow; receiving the National Safety Council's Distinguished Service to Safety Award; being recognized by the State of Hawaii's 20th legislature for his innovative safety programs in 2000; and receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hawaii Governor in 2006.

The ASSE Foundation, established by and in partnership with the ASSE, generates funding and provides resources for scholarship, applied research, academic accreditation, and related academic initiatives in order to advance the safety, health, and environmental profession.
