NIOSH Sets Meeting on Firefighter Fatality Prevention Program

NIOSH announced it will host a public meeting Nov. 19 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Chicago O'Hare (5440 North River Road, Rosemont, IL 66018) to take comments on the agency's Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program. The program studies the causes of firefighters' deaths and disseminates the findings to help the fire service increase safety and adjust standards when necessary.

The public meeting is meant to ensure the program is meeting the needs of the stakeholders and to identify how the program can be improved to increase its impact on the safety and health of firefighters nationwide. NIOSH said it will consider all comments received at the meeting and those submitted by Dec. 19 (cite Docket Number NIOSH-063-A) to the NIOSH Docket Office, Robert A. Taft Laboratories, Mailstop C34, 4676 Columbia Parkway, Cincinnati, OH 45226 or e-mailed to [email protected]. in deciding how to proceed with the program.

At the meeting, NIOSH Acting Director Dr. Christine Branche will provide opening remarks before a NIOSH overview of the program and a summary of program changes and improvements since March 2006 are delivered. NIOSH will then present a set of draft strategic goals for stakeholders' consideration and comment.

NIOSH convened a similar stakeholders meeting in March 2006 and found it useful, according to the notice for this meeting.
