New NSC CEO Froetscher Launches Safety Ambassadors Initiative

Monday's opening session of the 96th Annual National Safety Congress was the first opportunity for many attendees to see the National Safety Council's new president and CEO, Janet Froetscher, in person. She and Joseph Ucciferro, chairman of the council's board of directors, greeted the audience and asked its members to participate in the Safety Ambassadors program, a new initiative aimed at improving safety in American homes and communities. This has long been a priority for the council.

"I took the job because I wanted to put council together with the power of all of your organizations and you," Froetscher said during her remarks. "We can make an enormous difference."

Ucciferro introduced Froetscher by saying, "Her energy, passion, and commitment are already obvious."

The pair announced the 2009 winner of NSC's coveted Green Cross for Safety Medal: FirstGroup of Aberdeen, Scotland. It is involved in transportation services, including school buses and transit bus systems, around the world. The company invests heavily in driver safety training, according to a presentation that featured Muir Lockhead, the company's leader. Sherri Stuewer, ExxonMobil's vice president and safety, health and environment, introduced the 2008 Robert W. Campbell Award winners: Fluor Hanford and the Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company of Bahrain.
