Louisiana Urges Fuel Planning, ExxonMobil Donates to Gustav Relief

Most Louisiana schools had reopened by Monday, but the state's recovery from Gustav was still a work in progress. The Louisiana Department of Education released a new report that said 73 percent of the state's public school students were back in their classrooms on Monday.

Gustav caused "widespread" power outages and damaged drinking water systems throughout the state, which required residents in some areas to boil their water before drinking it. The state's Department of Natural Resources secretary, Scott Angelle, urged Louisianans to begin planning for fuel needs as Hurricane Ike drew closer.

ExxonMobil donated $1.5 million to Gustav disaster relief in Louisiana, with the money going to the American Red Cross and United Way. The state's Workforce Commission and its unemployment insurance call center were without power until late Sunday, hampering its ability to make payments and offer other services.
