AIHA to host Respirator Color Coding Seminar

The American Industrial Hygiene Association will host "Color Coding of Respirator Air-Purifying Elements: NIOSH Requirements and Limitations," an intermediate TeleWeb Virtual Seminar on Sept. 9, 2008, from 2-4:30 p.m. ET.

AIHA said there has been some confusion regarding the color-coding requirements, possibly because of the reference to an obsolete ANSI respirator standard and because of changes to the reference color standards used. The course will explain in detail the letter recently sent out by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) on color coding of respirator elements. In addition, historical and international aspects of color coding respirator elements will provide some perspective.

This course will also review: (1) the regulations on maximum use concentrations for the listed contaminants for respirators incorporating these elements, and (2) how to calculate these numbers.

Featured speakers include Jay A. Parker, CIH, physical scientist, NIOSH/National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL), and William King, NIOSH/NPPTL. This course will explain the NIOSH regulations from Title 42 CFR Part 84 and other regulations and standards that govern:

  • The color coding requirements for the elements on air-purifying respirators, including cartridges, canisters, and filters.
  • The MUC for various types of respirators incorporating these elements.
  • The use of elements approved for more than one contaminant in atmospheres that may contain more than one contaminant.

Attendees will be provided with tools to enable them to:

  • Recognize the color coding system used for respirator elements.
  • Calculate MUCs for air-purifying respirators.
  • Know how and when to use air-purifying respirators for protection against multiple gases, vapors, and particulates.
  • Quickly determine if workers are wearing the correct respirator they are assigned.
