BCSC to Host Health & Safety Summits throughout Province
The British Columbia Safety Council says it has believed for many years that communities throughout the province do not place a high enough priority on safety, resulting in an "epidemic" number of injuries. To combat the problem, the council has decided to host a series of four Health & Safety Summits this fall.
BCSC's Health & Safety Summit will visit the cities of Kelowna, Prince George, Victoria, and Langley and will include several free sessions for anyone in the communities wishing to attend. In addition, the council says it will offer special sessions for young people and professional occupational safety sessions for employers and their employees. The goal, says BCSC, is to educate and provide practical safety solutions to address safety concerns at home, on the roads, at play, and in the workplace.
"We have long realized that accurate safety information, proper education, and training are synonymous with managing the risks we face on a day-to-day basis," said BCSC Executive Director Bryan Lowes. "We look forward to working with the communities, to help its citizens, students, and their families become more informed and aware of the risks they face."
Through its safety and educational programs, the council says it will encourage young workers, drivers, and those in the community at large to develop life-saving safety habits. Since a majority of injuries that occur, whether on the worksite, on the road or at home result from a lack of accurate information and training, developing proactive safety habits is a direct and effective way to reduce the toll injuries have on all of us, BCSC said.
