ACHMM to Collapse Building in Minneapolis for Training

The Academy of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers plan to collapse a building as part of a staged hazardous chemicals incident training exercise during its national conference Sept. 7-10 at the Hyatt Regency at Nicollet Mall in Minneapolis. The building collapse itself will take place Sept. 10, following a morning tabletop exercise at the Hyatt, providing an overview and other critical information about the simulated exercise. The afternoon live-action demonstration will be staged at the Minneapolis Fire Department Training Center.

In addition to ACHMM members and Minneapolis firefighters, other local emergency responders will be on hand for the event, as will local demolition contractors Carl Bolander and Sons Inc. and Lloyd's Construction Inc., who will provide heavy demolition equipment to show how it can be used to access and remove hazardous material containers from a collapsed structure. Other participants will include Bay West Inc. and members of the Associated General Contractors of Minnesota.

The live-action building collapse session will take plaece from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the MFD Training Center, 25 37th Avenue NE. The event is designed to teach national and international EHS&S professionals best-practice techniques for effectively managing a hazardous materials emergency. Security restrictions will be enforced. For more information, contact Alan Greilsamer, Communications Resources LLC, at [email protected] or(703) 760-7007 office.
