What Happens in Vegas . . . is Networking
Attracting safety professionals from the top levels of management across the country--and, indeed, the world--Safety 2008 provides a forum for attendees to learn about the latest issues and trends in the safety, health, and environmental profession. The range of topics combined with the quality of speakers makes this conference program one of the strongest in the industry, offering participants the opportunity to meet with an audience covering a wide range of specialties, organizations, and career levels in a professional atmosphere focused on educating the SH&E professional. The name of the game here is networking.
With all the venues in place for meeting new people, organizations, and companies--from the various receptions and exposition floor possibilities to the practice specialty meetings, luncheons, and "International Lounge"--the chance to network is built into the conference, and participants almost have to go out of their way for it not to happen. Still, as ASSE reminds attendees, "You get out of it what you put into it."
With that thought in mind, the society offers these tips for maximizing their time this week in Las Vegas: "You need to extend yourself," ASSE says. "Bring plenty of business cards. Motivate yourself meet people at your lunch table. Go to the sessions, participate and ask questions. Attend and participate in as much of the PDC as you can. Make it a point to bring back 40 business cards and contact these people within three months. You will find the conference that much more educational and enjoyable!"
Our impression, formed partly by the sheer number of business cards we've already collected after just the first day, is that most attendees came prepared and are heeding the society's advice.
