Healthier America Commission Holding First Field Hearing June 12

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Commission to Build a Healthier America will hold its first field hearing June 12 in Raleigh, N.C., to showcase promising programs in early childhood development and testimony from local leaders and national experts about non-medical programs that are improving children's health and wellness. Commission Co-Chairs Mark McClellan, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Engelberg Center for Health Care Reform at the Brookings Institution and former FDA commissioner and CMS administrator, and Alice Rivlin, Ph.D., senior economist at Brookings and former OMB director, will convene the hearing.

The commission (www.commissiononhealth.org) will conduct the field hearing at Raleigh's Marbles Kids Museum. The hearing will include an opening session, three witness panels, and a public comment period. Jack Shonkoff, M.D., Julius B. Richmond FAMRI professor in Child Health and Development and director of the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University, will be the keynote speaker, while foundation President/CEO Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, M.D., will provide closing remarks.

The commission began its work in February 2008, investigating how factors outside the health care system, such as education and housing, affect the health of the American public. The commission's charge is to recommend near-term solutions for improving how long and how well Americans live. In 2009, the panel will issue its recommendations.
