ASSE SPYs Awarded at Safety 2008
As part of Safety 2008, ASSE's Professional Development Conference held last week in Las Vegas, the society bestowed its annual Region Safety Professional of the Year (SPY) awards to members from each of the eight society regions for their ongoing contributions to their regions, chapters, the society and their commitment to protecting people, property, and the environment.
The recipients were Dave R. Parsons of Salem, Ore.; Michelle D. Steeler of Boise, Idaho; Joel Tietjens, CSP, CSHM, of Spring, Texas; Pam B. Perrich, CIH, of Pensacola, Fla.; Beth A. Muehlich, ASP, of Omaha, Neb.; Eva C. Mann, CSP, of Richmond, Va.; Michael A. McCullion, CSP, ARM, of Ashburn, Va.; Hal P. Williams, CSP, OHST of Ripley, Tenn.; and Remi Fleuette of Rindge, N.H.
The Region SPY awards, voted on by peers, are given annually to the most outstanding safety professionals for contributions to service and leadership within their regions and chapters, ASSE said. Each of the society's eight regions contain anywhere from 15 to 20 chapters.
Parsons, of the Columbia-Willamette Chapter, received the award for Region I. He serves as a safety and loss control consultant for the Associated General Contractors (AGC), Oregon Columbia Chapter. Steeler, risk manager at the Washington Division of URS and member of the Snake River Chapter, received the Region II SPY award. Tietjens, president of T-Jens & T-Jens Inc. and a member of the Gulf Coast Chapter, won the Region III SPY award.
The Region IV winner from the Pensacola Chapter, Perrich, serves as supervisor, industrial hygiene at the Naval Hospital Pensacola. The Great Plaines Chapter member and winner of the Region V SPY award, Muehlich, is a corporate safety manager at Omaha Steaks. There were two Region VI winners this year: Mann, a safety consultant for Safety Improvement Service and member of the Colonial Virginia Chapter, and McCullion of the National Capitol Chapter, who serves as director, safety & health at SMACNA.
Williams serves as safety and WC manager at Marvin Windows & Doors of Tennessee. As a member of the Northwest Tennessee Chapter, he won the Region VII SPY award. The Region VIII award went to Fleuette from the Greater Boston Chapter. He serves as safety manager for P J Keating Co.
