Peace Officers' Memorial Day Celebrated Nationwide

Today is the day in 2008 when law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty are honored for their sacrifices. Departments around the nation have held ceremonies throughout this week, which is 2008's Police Week, but today is Peace Officers' Memorial Day, according to the proclamation signed by President Bush.

The document said, in part, "With valor and devotion, our country's law enforcement officers stand watch on the front lines and help make our communities safer and more secure. Fulfilling their duties with courage and commitment, they work tirelessly and put themselves in harm's way, exemplifying the good and decent character of America."

A joint congressional resolution approved Oct. 1, 1962, authorizes the president to designate May 15 of each year as Peace Officers' Memorial Day and the week in which it falls as Police Week and to direct that the flag be flown at half staff on Peace Officers' Memorial Day.
