NIOSH Experts to Give Nanotechnology Update
As nanotechnology continues to grow, so do the questions surrounding its safety. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has long been on the forefront of an industry-wide movement to learn all it can about the possible health effects associated with worker nanoparticle exposure. Its "Nanotechnology Topic Page" has quickly become an authoritative clearing house of knowledge containing updates on field research, periodic reports, and more.
At AIHce 2008, attendees will have the change to get a first hand update from some of NIOSH's leading nanotechnology experts by attending Roundtable Discussion #228, titled "Ask the Experts: An Update on NIOSH Research in Nanotechnology," that is scheduled for tomorrow, from 10 a.m.-Noon.
The purpose of this roundtable is to make NIOSH experts available to update the industrial hygiene community on research being conducted by the institute in specific areas of nanotechnology. Topics to be addressed include: NIOSH guidance documents; field assessment experience, including measurement methods, work practices, and control procedures; toxicology studies; filtration and respiratory protection; personal protective equipment; and guidance on qualitative hazard characterization and risk management.
Brief updates will be given by each NIOSH scientist on the following topics:
- Update on the NIOSH Nanotechnology Research Center; C. L. Geraci, NIOSH, Cincinnati.
- The NIOSH Nanotechnology Field Research Team; M.M. Methner, NIOSH, Cincinnati.
- The NIOSH Nanotoxicology Research Program: An Update; V. Castranova, NIOSH, Morgantown, W.Va.
- Nanomaterial Filtration, Respirator, and Personal Protective Equipment Research: An Update of the NIOSH Program; R. Shaffer, NIOSH, Pittsburgh.
- Guidance on Risk Assessment and Management for Safe Nanotechnology; M. Hoover, NIOSH, Morgantown, W.Va.
