Earth Day 2008: For Employers, Energy Efficiency and E-Waste Avoidance

Happy Earth Day 2008. On this, the 38th edition of the event that began April 22, 1970, environmental concern may be greater than ever, with energy prices at record levels, global warming increasingly accepted as a worldwide problem, and organizations bent on sustainability and efficiency as never before.

EPA recounts the event's history at www.epa.gov/earthday/history.htm and also at www.epa.gov/earthday/espanol. The agency has a page for Earth Day At Work, too, (www.epa.gov/earthday/work.htm) with resources for reducing pollutants created by commuting, getting your company to adopt an Environmental Management Plan, replacing electronic devices without creating waste, and encouraging your employer to become an environmental steward.

Some office products (computers, faxes, etc.) have earned the ENERGY STAR label; visit www.energystar.gov and the other sites for more information on these and on Earth Day activities in your local area.
