ASSE Announces 2008 Election Winners; Hill Wins SVP Contest

ASSE released results today of its March election of 2008 offices. The winner of the intriguing ASSE senior vice president contest is Darryl C. Hill, CSP, of Auburn Hills, Mich., who is safety and health officer for ABB North America. Hill, ASSE's current vice president for finance, defeated Terrie S. Norris, CSP, ARM, CPSI, risk control manager for Bickmore Risk Service of Long Beach, Calif. The victory means Hill, an African-American, will become president in mid-2010, when the society celebrates its 100th anniversary.

Hill and other newly elected officers will take their positions on July 1, 2008. They include Warren K. Brown, CSP, ARM, CSHM, supervisor of safety at DMAX, Ltd., of Moraine, Ohio, who is succeeding Michael W. Thompson, CSP, of Houston, TX, as ASSE president for the 2008-09 year. Succeeding Brown as president-elect is C. Christopher Patton, CSP, of St. Louis, Mo., a principal safety, health and environmental engineer for Covidien.

Elected vice president for finance was James D. Smith, MS, CSP, managing director for the Florida region of risk control services for Arthur J. Gallagher Risk Management Services in Boca Raton, Fla. He defeated EHS consultant Frederick A. Miller, CSP. George W. Pearson, CSP, ARM, was elected vice president for the practices and standards council; Pearson is safety manager for SunCom Wireless in Richmond, Va. Running unopposed in their regions for two-year terms as region vice presidents were James G. Gallup, P.E., CSP, for Region II and James H. Morris, III for Region VI. Director of Safety for DS Waters of America, Inc. of Atlanta, Ga., Michael Belcher, CSP, was elected Region IV vice president, and Indiana, Pa.-based safety consultant Robert E. McClay, CSP, was elected Region VIII vice president.
