ASSE Senior VP Contest Mirrors National Campaign

Two attractive candidates, an African-American man and a white woman, are vying for the same high office. They have years of experience, degrees, and certifications. And, no, this isn't the current Democratic presidential primary in Ohio. Instead, it's the 2008 campaign for senior vice president of the American Society of Safety Engineers.

Starting Saturday, ASSE members may vote in this and several other contests for leadership positions. The senior VP candidates, Darryl C. Hill, CSP, and Terrie S. Norris, CSP, ARM, CPSI, are significant for more than their gender or their contest's similarity to the Obama/Clinton dogfight. Whoever wins when the voting ends March 31 between Hill and Norris will become president-elect of ASSE a year from now, and president of the society a year after that -- the year ASSE will celebrate its 100th anniversary, ASSE spokesman Diane Hurns said Wednesday.

Also on this year's ASSE ballot are contested races for VP-FInance between Frederick A. Miller, CSP, and James D. Smith, MS, CSP; for VP-Council on Practices and Standards between Jeffery C. Camplin, CSP, CPEA, and George W. Pearson, CSP, ARM; for Region IV VP between Michael Belcher, CSP, and Frank J. Lakotich, CSP; and for Region VIII VP between Robert E. McClay, CSP, and Eric M. Stager, CSP, OHST.

The outcome will be announced about a week after voting ends, after a check of ballots to ensure the counting was accurate, Hurns said.
