MDOT's New 'Take It Slow' Campaign Plows into Gear for Winter

The Michigan Department of Transportation announced a new safety campaign which reminds motorists to use caution when faced with winter driving conditions. Starting this week, MDOT's "Ice and Snow, Take it Slow" campaign will plow into high gear as public service announcements begin airing on the radio and posters appear in rest areas. The new campaign also highlights various road conditions available online at www.michigan.gov/roadconditions.

"Each winter, drivers are the cause of many crashes--crashes that can be prevented," said MDOT Director Kirk T. Steudle. "The secret to safety is anticipating what the road conditions will be like and adjusting your speed accordingly. Taking more time to get to your destination can make a big difference, too, sometimes between life and death.

"Motorists should accelerate or brake slowly during winter weather events, slow down when visibility is poor, wear safety belts, and make sure children are buckled up properly. Remember, maintain a safe distance from snowplows," Steudle added, echoing the campaign poster, which says "When it snows, use your head--not your feet," and "Don't crowd the plow. A snowplow operator's field of vision is restricted. You can see them, but they may not see you."
