13 Injured, 1 Missing in Florida Parking Garage Collapse

A parking garage under construction in downtown Jacksonville, Fla., partially collapsed about 6 a.m. today. Rescue personnel transported 13 workers to area hospitals and are searching for one person still unaccounted for.

The incident happened as workers were pouring cement at the sixth floor of a parking garage going up next to the second Berkman Plaza tower that is under construction next to the St. Johns River. Work began at 2 a.m., and the collapse happened roughly four hours later. One construction worker told an interviewer at the scene that the levels of the garage came down like dominos.

Jacksonville Fire-Rescue officials said the workers injured in the collapse are stable and that none of the known injuries appear to be critical, but they are still treating the collapse site as a "mass-casualty event." As of 8:30 a.m. today, two of the workers were listed in "serious" condition, two in "good" condition, and nine had minor injuries, according to authorities. Nine others were treated and released at the scene.
