DOL Awards More Than $680,000 to Assist Iowa Whirlpool Workers
The U.S. Department of Labor yesterday announced a $680,802 grant, with an initial release of $290,412, to provide assistance for approximately 300 workers affected by the closure of Whirlpool Corp. located in Newton, Iowa.
"Iowa has begun implementing innovative strategies to assist workers affected by the closure of Whirlpool," said Assistant Secretary of Labor for Employment and Training Emily Stover DeRocco. "With the help of a previous National Emergency Grant and strategic regional planning, these workers are receiving important re-employment assistance that will help them compete for good jobs in growing industries."
Since May 2006, Whirlpool Corp. has been in the process of closing its Newton facility, which will be permanently closed as of December 31.
On March 6, the state received from DOL a $250,000 grant to develop new strategies and realign existing ones to establish economic recovery in Newton and surrounding areas. On May 10, Iowa received an additional $263,000 in funds to begin to implement those strategies.
