Halloween Pails Recalled for Excessive Lead Levels
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the Charlotte, N.C.-based Family Dollar Stores, announced a voluntary recall of about 142,000 halloween pails. Consumers should stop using the recalled pails immediately, the commission says.
The purple pails are decorated with a witch flying on a broomstick silhouetted against a green moon. The green paint used in the decoration contains excessive levels of lead, violating the federal lead paint standard. The pail measures about 6.5 inches high. “Distributed by Family Dollar, Inc,” SKU number 1033953, and UPC number 017845000591 are printed on a label on the pail. Family Dollar stores nationwide sold the pails from August 2007 through this month for about $1. Orange Halloween pails with black jack-o-lantern decorations are not included in this recall. The pails were manufactured in China.
While no incidents or injuries have been reported, consumers should immediately take the recalled Halloween pail away from children and return it to any Family Dollar store for a full refund, the commission says.
