Bush Nominates New BLS Commissioner

President George W. Bush has nominated Keith Hall to be commissioner of Labor Statistics, the top post at the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics. The position is currently vacant, with economist Kathleen P. Utgoff having completed her four-year term.

Hall is chief economist at the Council of Economic Advisors, which is part of the Executive Office of the President. Utgoff had been a senior economist for the council before her appointment but was vice president of the Center for Naval Analyses, a research and development center in Virginia, when Bush nominated her.

Hall previously served as chief economist at the Department of Commerce and as senior international economist in the Research Division in the Office of Economics at the U.S. International Trade Commission. His nomination is subject to U.S. Senate confirmation.
