Teen-Made Safety PSAs Available for Download
May was Safe Jobs for Youth Month, but for many teens entering the workforce this summer, the need for safety awareness is still only just beginning. Among the resources available for employers, parents, teens, and educators to raise that awareness are free public service announcement videos developed by California teens between the ages 14-18. The California Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) in collaboration with the California Partnership for Young Worker and Safety distributed the PSAs to news agencies across the state and have now made them available for download from the DIR Web site at www.dir.ca.gov/YoungWorker/.
The teens who developed the 30-second videos focused on a particular safety hazard or a labor law violation commonly experienced by teens. Judging was based on overall production value, creativity, clarity of information, video and/or audio quality, and presentation effectiveness. Students from Ramona High School and from the Inspired Young Villagers, a community group in Los Angeles, garnered first place, receiving a cash prize of $400 and the opportunity to have their work aired on television stations statewide.
