London to Host Lab Safety/Quality Trade Fair
L.A.B., a new European trade fair devoted to analysis and bio and laboratory equipment, will take place at ExCeL, London from Oct. 2-4, 2007.
Along with an exhibition, the one-day event will feature a conference involving internationally renowned specialists debating on key issues within the industry.
Presenters will include:
- Dr. Chris Griffith, head of research at the University of Wales Cardiff Institute, presenting, "HCAIs and Hospital Environmental Surfaces: To sample or not to sample?." This presentation will examine whether there is a link between surface contamination and health care-associated infections, whether a link exists between cleaning and surface contamination, and how and why cleanliness can be assessed by outlining an integrated approach.
- Dr. Clare Taylor, consultant in Haematology & Transfusion Medicine at the Royal Free Hospital & National Blood Service, speaking on "Transfusion Science: Optimizing Blood Safety," which will address the latest developments in the monitoring and identification of variant CJD, minimizing bacterial risks, and asking how organizational changes in transfusion science are threatening safety and efficiency. In addition, Taylor will review the latest technologies emerging to support excellence in blood safety and adverse incidents and accidents.
- Dr. Kate Cuschieri, specialist at the Virology Centre, Department of Laboratory Medicine at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, will present an overview on HPV testing by analyzing the molecular pathology of HPV, discussing the virological diagnosis of HPV, looking at the clinical considerations for HPV testing, and debating whether it is feasible to introduce wide-scale HPV testing.
- David Houliston, governance manager for the Directorate of Pathology at the Royal Bournemouth & Christchurch NHS Foundation Trust, will examine how to prepare for assessment for the new "CPA Quality Standards." The presentation will cover the key challenges to overcome, how to manage the change, communicating with senior managers, the role of the quality officer, and how the new regulations contribute to an overall quality improvement.
- Dr. Robin Braithwaite, director of the Regional Laboratory for Toxicology at City Hospital Birmingham, will address "Quality Management and CPA," which includes discussion on the preparation for CPA inspection in the real world, quality management best practice in health care labs, and workload management using quality systems.
Other topic points to be addressed during the conference include:
- Achieving service improvements through managed pathology networks
- The latest developments in liquid-based cytology
- New technologies in immunology
