International Efforts, Technology on New ASSE President's Agenda

Mike Thompson, CSP, of BP America in Houston, Texas, took over June 26 as the 93rd president of the American Society of Safety Engineers with a pledge to focus on outreach to the business community. He briefly discussed four themes for his one-year presidency, which will end during the Safety 2008 meeting in Las Vegas in June 2008.

Continuing to focus attention on the value provided by ASSE's members and by the safety and health profession is the first theme listed by Thompson. He said another priority is expanding North American Occupational Safety and Health Week, which is now observed by professional organizations in Canada, Mexico, and the United States, to a global observance. International activities will be a key focus for the year, Thompson said, adding that an ASSE task force has been working diligently in this area for several years.

A final focus will be making use of new technologies for delivering products and services to members and others, he said.
