Academics Forum Tosses Old Presentation Model

The American Practice Specialty (APS) promises to take a different approach to its annual academics forum, which starts tomorrow at the American Society of Safety Engineers' annual Professional Development Conference at Orlando, Fla.'s Orange County Convention Center.

Getting away from its previous lecture/presentation format, this year's program includes seven morning sessions; a Keynote Luncheon Speaker session from retired U.S. Brig. Gen. Orin L. Godsey addressing the issue of leadership in the safety, health, and environmental profession; and a series of afternoon Roundtable discussions that start with an update on the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) from Paul Specht, CSP, Ph.D. This will be followed by several informal 15-minute discussions from participating colleges and universities about their safety and health programs.

Wayne Jones, Ed.D., APS administrator, praises the new roundtable approach. "The afternoon session will add excitement to an already exciting and informative forum. All occupational safety academics should plan to participate in this event. ASSE's student activities taskforce has held roundtable discussions for years with great results, and I anticipate an equally enjoyable and interesting outcome for the 2007 Academics Forum," he said.
