ASSE Crowns Safety Professional of the Year, Other Honorees

In recognition of more than 20 years of continued efforts to enhance workplace safety and health, ASSE today is naming Linda Tapp, ALCM, CSP, as the recipient of the Edgar Monsanto Queeny Safety Professional of the Year. President and principal consultant of Cherry Hill, N.J.-based Crown Safety LLC, Tapp is responsible for providing occupational safety, health, and ergonomics consulting services to industries throughout North America and the United Kingdom. A professional member of ASSE for more than 18 years, Tapp has served on the Board of Certified Safety Professionals' board of directors since 2004.

The annual SPY award is given to the most outstanding ASSE member for accomplishments and contributions in the occupational safety, health, and environmental field. The award was created and sponsored by the Monsanto Corp. in honor of its third president and son of the founder, Edgar Monsanto Queeny, for his commitment to protect workers from industrial accidents and health hazards.

In other awards news from Safety 2007 in Orlando, on June 23 the ASSE Foundation's Distinguished Service Award went to Karl Jacobson, senior vice president for loss prevention at Boston-based Liberty Mutual Group, for his commitment to and support of the foundation and for playing a major role in the development of a corporate giving program and the scholarship endowment program. He also secured funding for the Liberty Mutual Research Fellowship, the Liberty Mutual Scholarship, and the Future Leaders Conference.

"Karl's leadership, commitment, and vision are a few of the reasons why the foundation has flourished over the years," said ASSE Foundation Chair Kennith D. Brock, CSP. "During Karl's seven-year tenure at the Foundation, he served as trustee, chair, and past chair, and worked with the board to increase donations--raising $2.1 million during the course of his term." Jacobson has been an ASSE professional member since 1979.

Meanwhile, ASSE bestowed its highest honor on M.E. "Eddie" Greer, CSP, OHST, naming him a Society Fellow for his lifelong excellence in safety and service. Greer, president and owner of the Sugar Land, Texas-based Eddie Greer & Associates safety and health consulting firm, is a past president of ASSE and currently chairs the Society Professional Conduct Committee. He was honored as the Safety Professional of the Year by the Texas Safety Foundation's Gulf Coast Chapter in 1987.
