ExxonMobil's 2006 Record Earnings Came with Record Worker Safety, Too

Irving, Texas-based ExxonMobil had quite a year in 2006. Its annual report does not even start with revenue or profits, although those are impressive: $365 billion in revenue for the year and a record $39.5 billion in net income. Instead, the report starts by touting almost $20 billion in capital investment, major new projects started all over the world, and the best-ever safety performance and fewest hydrocarbon spills in the corporation's history.

The report says ExxonMobil's safety performance in 2006 topped its industry, citing American Petroleum Institute members' employee safety data. Those competitors are doing well, with lost-time injuries and illnesses trending steadily downward to below 0.3 per 200,000 work hours in 2005; ExxonMobil employees and its contractors' employees both achieved about 0.05 per 200,000 hours in 2006, the report says.

"In managing the Corporation's day-to-day activities throughout the world, we work to ensure that all our operations are safe and environmentally responsible," the report says on the page titled "Integrity." It continues, "Our globally implemented management systems provide a framework for proactively managing risk and move us further toward our goal of zero safety incidents and operations with minimal environmental impact. We are committed to operations excellence in all areas of our business."
