Avian Flu, TB Control on Agenda for 60th World Health Assembly

The Palais des Nations in, Geneva, Switzerland, is the setting for the 60th World Health Assembly that will take place May 14-23. It is the annual meeting of the World Health Organization's 193 Member States. This year's discussions will touch on avian and pandemic influenza; smallpox eradication: destruction of variola virus stocks; malaria; tuberculosis control; prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases; and a draft global plan of action on workers' health.

Two invited speakers will address the assembly May 15: Thoraya Ahmed Obaid, executive director of the United Nations Population Fund, and Jens Stoltenberg, prime minister of Norway. Obaid will speak about collaborative activities with WHO in women's health, HIV/AIDS, and strengthening health systems. Stoltenberg will discuss the Millennium Development Goals, especially Goals 4 & 5 (child and maternal health), and how Norway is implementing them.
