Workforce Protections Panel Eyes Sufficiency of OSHA Standards

"Have OSHA Standards Kept up with Workplace Hazards?" is the title for a hearing of the U.S. House Subcommittee on Workforce Protections that is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow. Witnesses had not been announced as of Friday afternoon; visit http://edworkforce.house.gov/index.shtml for updates.

The hearing is timed to mark April 28, Workers Memorial Day, and the Web site of the overall Committee on Education and Labor, chaired by Rep. George Miller, D-Calif., highlighted numbers that are likely to be discussed: almost 16 workers die in accidents per day and 50,000 to 60,000 die each year from occupationally related diseases, the committee's notice says.

This is the smallest of the five subcommittees. Chaired by Lynn Woolsey, D-Calif., it has five Democratic members and three Republican members.
