Report Compares Canadian, EU, U.S. Policies on Chemicals

The group Environmental Defense worked with Pollution Probe in Canada to release the first-ever study comparing the European Union's new REACH regulation with industrial chemicals policies in the United States and Canada. The report is available at www.environmentaldefense.org/article.cfm?contentid=6147.

The report, titled "Not That Innocent: A Comparative Analysis of Canadian, European Union and United States Policies on Industrial Chemicals," gives readers "a blueprint for addressing both long-standing deficiencies and newly emerging concerns over how government manages the potential risks of industrial chemicals," the environmental group said April 4.

It was written by Senior Health Program Scientist Richard A. Denison, Ph.D. The 140-page report identifies best practices that most effectively protect human health and the environment, ED said. The report says governments, the public, and companies often know little about the potential risks of most chemicals, and companies have little incentive to develop better information.
