Texas Observing Severe Weather Awareness Week

Texas Gov. Rick Perry has declared March 4-10 as Severe Weather Awareness Week, and the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) has responded by offering its own guidance urging Texans to review their policies.

Tips the agency recommended included increasing or expanding coverage if the value of the home or its contents has increased; updating the home inventory with a TDI home inventory checklist (www.tdi.state.tx.us/consumer/documents/cb086.pdf); and for business owners, considering business interruption coverage, which compensates for lost income and certain operating expenses if the business is forced to vacate because of a loss covered in the policy.

The agency's assistance includes tips for filing claims and dealing with a flooded home or car. TDI's Consumer Help Line is 800-252-3439; the TDI Web site is www.tdi.state.tx.us. TDI also has an Arson/Burn Ban Hotline at 877-434-7345.
