OSHA Sets Two Stakeholder Meetings on Ionizing Radiation
OSHA announced it will hold informal stakeholder meetings as it continues to collect information about occupational exposures to ionizing radiation. The two events are scheduled for 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. March 16 at DOL headquarters in Washington, D.C. (concerning uses in the healing arts, including medicine, dentistry, chiropractor services, and veterinary medicine) and 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. March 26 in Orlando, Fla. (in conjunction with the Annual Research Symposium of the American Society for Nondestructive Testing, it will cover nondestructive testing).

OSHA says use of ionizing radiation has increased significantly in recent years and is used in security operations, hospitals and medical offices, dental offices, manufacturing, research facilities, forestry and agriculture, and wastewater treatment plants. The agency began collecting data in 2005 on this and related issues as it considers whether to take rulemaking action. OSHA's existing standard on Ionizing Radiation (29 CFR 1910.1096) has not been significantly updated since its adoption in 1971. Two additional stakeholder meetings to cover non-medical use of accelerators and the use of ionizing radiation in security operations are planned.
