Respiratory Protection: New Challenges for Program Administrators in 2023

OSHA’s respiratory protection requirements are extensive, and they can be overwhelming for even the most seasoned safety professionals. The employer shall designate a program administrator who is qualified by appropriate training or experience that is commensurate with the complexity of the program to administer or oversee the respiratory protection program and conduct the required evaluations of program effectiveness. On top of these requirements, new challenges face every industry, such as healthcare, construction, and emergency response, and more. Each has their own unique concerns and needs. Emerging infectious diseases such as monkeypox, polio, and measles are seeing a resurgence and we must be prepared to safeguard all workplaces.

Confusion is not a defense for noncompliance. Following industry best practices is vital for companies and first responders. New job safety analysis must be performed to reevaluate our workplaces and if necessary, initiate new baseline respiratory protection and PPE requirements. These new challenges can affect day-to-day operations and can be challenging to your business continuity plan. Are you ready for these challenges?
