Avoiding Disaster: Growing Concerns and NIOSH Recommendations for Occupational Heat Stress
In the last 100 years, the global mean air temperature has increased, creating major concern about heat stress particularly among workers. Many workers spend their entire work shift in a variety of indoor and outdoor hot environments that may become hotter because of ambient rising temperatures, increases in extreme heat events, or shifting and expanding hot seasons. For many workplaces, controlling for these heat exposures can be challenging. However, exposure to extreme heat can result in occupational illnesses (e.g., heat stroke, heat exhaustion), and heat can also increase workers’ risk of injuries (e.g., burns, dizziness resulting in falls and traumatic injuries).

Speaker:
Dr. Brenda Jacklitsch is a research health scientist and serves as Coordinator for the NIOSH Small Business Assistance Program at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). She also leads the NIOSH Climate and Work Workgroup. Dr. Jacklitsch is a heat stress subject matter expert and was the lead project officer for the NIOSH Criteria for a Recommended Standard: Occupational Exposure to Heat and Hot Environments, and is currently interested in designing and evaluating educational products targeting employers and workers that may have limited resources and access to professional OSH assistance. She has a PhD in Health Education from the University of Cincinnati, and an MS in Epidemiology and a BS in Biomedical Science from Texas A&M University.
