Fighting the Preventable: How Safety Professionals Can Regulate Noise Exposure and Better Protect Worker Hearing

Those with hearing loss can suffer from more than just the original symptom—they can become withdrawn from social gatherings, fight depression as a result of isolation and in some cases, experts have found they have a greater likelihood of developing cognitive disorders such as dementia. According to NIOSH, 12 percent of U.S. workers have difficulty hearing and 24 percent of those workers have developed hearing loss because of occupational exposures.

The presentation will look at noise as it relates to occupational exposures and human hearing and summarize the requirements of the OSHA general industry regulation for occupational noise exposures. We will cover when engineering and administrative controls are required and when an employer is required to implement a formal hearing conservation program (HCP). Many employers confuse when hearing protection is required by the standard—the presentation will clear up that requirement.
