Integration of health and safety is not a new concept, but there is new opportunity to accelerate its adoption. People spend one-third of their adult lives in workplaces. They do not leave health conditions at home when they go to work or leave occupational disease exposure at work when they return home. Addressing health and safety in an integrated way can help ease the burden of healthcare costs, increase worker productivity, and ultimately, improve business results.
This session will share recent research that examines organizational factors that can facilitate or inhibit the integration of health, safety, and wellness into unified programs. Experts from UL’s Integrated Health & Safety Institute (IHSI) will explore the cultural elements of organizations that underlie successful health and safety program implementation, as well as to identify the common pitfalls that can inhibit integration.

Speakers:
Todd Hohn, CSP, is the Executive Director for UL’s Integrated Health & Safety Institute where he acts as the safety ambassador delivering on UL’s mission to promote safe living and working environments around the world. Mr. Hohn is a U.S Delegate for the creation of the new ISO 45001 global standard for Occupational Health and Safety, is the Honors and Awards Chairperson for ASSE’s Construction Practice Specialty and is a Board Member for HR.com advising them on emerging health and safety issues. Prior to working with UL, Mr. Hohn worked with both Predictive Solutions and CNA Insurance. He received his B.S. degree in Safety from Illinois State University and completed the Advanced Executive Education Program at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business, as well as the Executive Development Program at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. Mr. Hohn is a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and a Professional Member of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE).
E. Andrew Kapp, PhD, CSP, CHM, Research Manager, is the Research Manager for UL’s Workplace Health and Safety division. His work focuses on applied research, development and advocacy on a national and global level. Dr. Kapp is also Visiting Senior Lecturer at the University of the West Indies in in Occupational and Environmental Safety and Health, a Professional Member of the American Society of Safety Engineers, a member of the editorial board of Professional Safety, and a Member of the Institute of Hazardous Materials Management Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) Examination Committee. Dr. Kapp received his PhD in Industrial Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, as well as a MS from the University of Southern California, and a BS from Vanderbilt University. As former Officer of Marines, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal for his role in Operation Desert Storm.
