It is a common misconception that dual hazard protection is “better” for all thermal hazard environments. The truth is, fire events and electric arc flash exposures are two very different hazards, each with their own applicable standards. NFPA2112 and 2113 provide guidance on protection requirements for environments with fire risks. NFPA70E for industrial workers, as well as NESC codes for utility workers, help outline electric arc hazards and the protection needed for different exposure energy levels.

So, is protection against both hazards necessary? Occasionally, the answer is yes. But understanding each standard and the meaning of certification and calorie ratings ensures you are not making unnecessary tradeoffs.
