The NFPA 96 committee in May 2015 will consider adding language to the standard

NFPA Tackling Food Trucks' Fire Safety

The NFPA 96 technical committee is reviewing language this month that could be included in that standard’s 2017 edition, according to an NFPA Journal article.

An article in the May/June issue of NFPA Journal explores fire safety issues of the food truck industry, which has mushroomed in many cities. dramatically increased in numbers and popularity in the last several years. The article, titled "All Up In Our Grill," cites a July 1, 2014, gas explosion in a Philadelphia food truck, which killed two people working in the truck and injured several others, as galvanizing interest in this topic, which is subject to what an NFPA summary of the article called a "patchwork of regulations, or lack thereof, throughout the nation."

The article reports that the International Fire Marshals Association convened a task force to create a proposal for a new chapter of NFPA 96, Ventilation Control and Fire Protection of Commercial Cooking Operations, that addresses food truck fire safety, and the new language was submitted to NFPA in December 2014. The NFPA 96 technical committee will review it this month for possible inclusion in the 2017 edition of the standard.

Food trucks' fire safety is the focus of a June 24 educational session at the NFPA Conference and Expo in Chicago. The "Mobile Food Truck Regulation: Developing a Recipe for Success" session will take place from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
