New Editor Sought for American Journal of Public Health

APHA recently announced that Mary E. Northridge, Ph.D., MPH, will complete her 16-year tenure as editor-in-chief of the journal in March 2015 and become its first editor emeritus.

The American Public Health Association recently announced that Mary E. Northridge, who has been editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Public Health since 1999, will finish her tenure in March 2015 and then become the journal's first editor emeritus. She also was the first female editor of the journal, having served previously as assistant, deputy, and interim editor.

"Through her dedication to scientific rigor and scholarly publishing coupled with her abiding commitment to advancing health equity and social justice, Dr. Northridge helped usher in a new era for the American Journal of Public Health," said APHA Executive Director Dr. Georges Benjamin, the publisher of the journal. "Under her leadership, the journal has connected the latest research and science, not only to other public health thinkers, but also directly to the diverse needs of our nation's health practice and policies. The next editor-in-chief will build upon this superb record of achievement in advancing the journal as a key resource in championing good health for all."

APHA has begun its search for a new editor-in-chief and has established a search committee to assist. In Northridge's farewell editorial, which will be published in the journal's September 2014 issue, she writes, "My appeal to the next team of journal editors is to remain steadfast in the honorable yet elusive pursuit of health equity, and I will be standing with you in support and encouragement. To echo the exhortation that John F. Duane and I wrote after President Obama was elected to his first term in office, '[T]hey deserve the best counsel our intellectual infrastructure has to offer. To be a part of charting a more humane course forward is more important than the ascendency of a pet theory or the appointment of a member of a given group to a strategic post … As a broad community of public health enthusiasts and supporters, let us act on the impetus to serve the public good and spend the rest of our lives working together to realize the dream of a just and healthy society.'"
