Major League Baseball Developing Padded Caps for Pitchers

Major League Baseball "is working with a half-dozen manufacturers to develop padded caps that could help pitchers avoid serious injury if struck by a line drive or a broken bat," according to a news story posted by MLB.com reporter Paul Hagen, who writes that their discussions are in the preliminary stages. The league hopes to have prototypes ready for pitchers to wear on a voluntary basis by spring training 2013, he reported.
Hagen's article quotes Pat Courtney, MLB's senior vice president of public relations: "We take the matter of head injuries seriously and are working with a number of different manufacturers to develop equipment that will provide adequate safety for our players."
His report mentions injuries suffered by pitchers Brandon McCarthy and Doug Fister last season and cites an ESPN report that Unequal Technologies Co. and EvoShield are two manufacturers in discussions with the league.
