ChemStewards 2010 Performance Improvement Awards Presented

Three facilities will be honored with Gold Awards during the Dec. 6 presentation in New York City.

The Society of Chemical Manufacturers and Affiliates has announced the winners of the 2010 Performance Improvement Awards from its ChemStewards® program. More than 25 member facilities won Gold, Silver, Bronze, or Educational Outreach awards for demonstrating outstanding commitment to continuous improvement in environmental protection, health, safety, and security. SOCMA said nearly 75 percent of eligible member companies competed for the top prize, the Gold Award.

Award recipients will be recognized during SOCMA's Dec. 6 Annual Dinner in New York City. Accepting the 2010 Gold Performance Improvement Award will be representatives of three facilities:

  • Baker Hughes' Rayne, La. and Sands Springs, Okla., facilities
  • Synthetech's plant in Albany, Ore.

These three made "exceptional and aggressive performance improvement in all five of the core principles of ChemStewards®, according to the association. "We commend all of this year's winners for their hard work and look forward to recognizing their achievements in New York," said SOCMA President and CEO Lawrence D. Sloan. "The continued increase in the number of applicants, coupled with the level of achievements presented by members, speaks to the growing success of SOCMA's ChemStewards® program, which is now in its fifth year."

Sloan said 40 percent of the applicants voluntarily provided information on their activities in green and sustainable chemistry. SOCMA is working to integrate a "green metric" into the ChemStewards® program that it will introduce next year.

The five ChemStewards® Core Principles are stakeholder communications, product stewardship, EHS&S in planning and operations, employee training and engagement, and resource management and waste minimization.
