Teen CPR/AED Campaign Nears Finish Line

Jan. 31 is the deadline for the Medtronic Foundation's $1,000 grants to schools' staffers to help fund CPR and AED training. The foundation funds the American Heart Association's Be the Beat campaign to educate teens about sudden cardiac arrest.

Schools have only a little more time to apply for the Medtronic Foundation's $1,000 grants to help fund CPR and AED training. The foundation, which funds the American Heart Association's Be the Beat campaign to educate teens about sudden cardiac arrest, wants grant applications to be submitted no longer than Jan. 31.

The online campaign is trying to engage 12- to 15-year-olds so they learn the basics of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and how to use an automated external defibrillator, amassing points as they play the site's interactive games, videos, and songs. Users will find:

  • The Basics: Three instructional videos that demonstrate conventional CPR with breaths, Hands-OnlyTM CPR, and how to use an AED.
  • The Heart Trek Experience: Virtual tour through a 3-D animated version of the heart in which participants earn points by playing video games and taking interactive quizzes.
  • The World of Hearts: Users create their own avatars, track and compare scores in the Heart Trek Experience with other users, and can view profiles and testimony of other participants.
  • Music Playlist: This is a downloadable list of 100-beat-per-minute songs. (100 beats per minute is the correct rate for chest compressions during CPR.)
  • Stuff: Free, printable stickers, T-shirt decals, and stationery and free downloadable widgets and wallpapers.

Visit the site's Teachers and Administration section for a lesson plan, tools for schools, a guest column by Alison Ellison, BSN, NCSN, project coordinator for Project S.A.V.E. at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, and more.
