Black Widow Spiders Found in Grocery Store Grapes

Several Aldi stores in Milwaukee have pulled their grapes due to the presence of a live black widow spider.

Several Aldi supermarkets in Milwaukee have pulled their entire supply of grapes due to the presence of a black widow spider, according to Food Safety News. According to the article, a shopper found a live black widow spider when purchasing grapes from the Wauwatosa, Wis. store. Aldi has said it will implement stricter inspection procedures to prevent this happening again.

Though the black widow spider appearance occurred in Wisconsin earlier this month, other surrounding states have had problems with black widow spiders in grapes, as well, according to the article. A family found a black widow spider in their grapes at a Kroger store in Michigan this month and two black widows were found in a St. Louis, Mo., Aldi in October. In addition, a black widow was found in the grapes of a Maplewood, Minn., school.

Some grape growers have been reported to use black widow spiders as an alternative to pesticides.
