Vienna Beef Cited for Workplace Safety Violations
The Chicago-based meat company faces $53,000 in fines
According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, a fine has been given to the hot dog manufacturer for violating ten different safety violations that were discovered during an inspection in May.
The inspection was a result of the Site-Specific Targeting Program from OHSA that focuses on investigating companies whose injury and illness rates are elevated.
The violations include: failing to train and evaluate powered industrial vehicle operators, lack of eye and face protection, a lack of energy control procedures, improper use of electrical cords, failing to lockout and tagout equipment and more. Of these, a handful were serious violations, which means that a violation could likely result in physical harm or even death.
Formed in the late 1800s, Vienna Beef produces everything from hot dogs, to deli meats, to pickles and relishes. The company has requested a meeting on Sept. 19 where they will discuss updates to their health and safety protocols.
