Gamesa Introduces Super-Sized Turbine

With a rotor diameter of 114 meters, the G114-2.0 MW is engineered to produce more energy from low-wind sites with lower operating cost and less noise.

A new wind turbine from the Spanish manufacturer Gamesa has a rotor diameter that is 27 yards longer than a regulation American football field and will provide a swept area of 10,207 square meters, the company announced April 12. Gamesa said the G114-2.0 MW Class IIIA is designed to achieve maximum returns from low-wind sites in Europe and the United States, as well as growth markets including India, China, and Brazil.

The rotor diameter is 114 meters and the blades are 55.5 meters long. The blades will maximize energy output with a lower operating cost while producing lower noise than previous turbines in this class, according to Gamesa.

"Our customers need to make the best use of the energy potential offered by low-wind sites and thus require a turbine that can get maximum energy with a low investment cost. The G114-2.0 MW turbine is based on the same technology used in the G97-2.0 MW, but with some elements optimized and reinforced," said Juan Diego Diaz, Gamesa's marketing director.

Gamesa will begin manufacturing initial prototypes in the third quarter of 2013, with the first turbines produced at the end of that year. Manufacturing of commercial models will commence in 2014.
