Unsafe Driving BASIC Factsheet Posted
It reminds commercial vehicle drivers that this BASIC requires obeying laws, ordinances, and regulations in a given jurisdiction and also such things as wearing seat belts and not exceeding speed limits.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has posted a factsheet to help motor carriers and their drivers understand the Unsafe Driving BASIC and steer clear of compliance problems. This is one of seven Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories (BASICs) used by FMCSA's Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) program to determine how a motor carrier ranks versus other carriers with a similar number of inspections, violations, or crashes.
This BASIC addresses the requirements of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations Part 392 – Driving of Motor Vehicles and Part 397 – Transportation of Hazardous Materials. These say commercial motor vehicles must not be driven dangerously or carelessly. Carriers will rank poorly on it if their drivers are found by law enforcement to be speeding, driving recklessly, or changing lanes improperly, and such carriers will receive warning letters or be investigated by FMCSA.
Carriers may log onto the CSA Safety Measurement System website to view their percentile ranking for each of the seven BASICs, along with records of their own roadside inspections; they can request a review of any record they believe is inaccurate, the factsheet explains.
